Basic Safety & Health Training for Hazardous Waste Site Personnel

Three-Day (24-hour) Safety Seminar
Course 25

This 24 hour course was designed for management, technical and field personnel with minimal experience at hazardous waste sites and EPA - RCRA regulated Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities. It provides basic information on the protection and safety of personnel engaged in field operations dealing with or potentially exposed to hazardous substances. After completing the course, participants will be more familiar with the general concepts, principles and procedures for protecting themselves from the harmful effects of hazardous materials, and the acceptable practices for minimizing danger to personnel.

This training program will involve classroom instruction, demonstrations and practice sessions and is intended to satisfy the current OSHA training requirements for 24 hours of offsite instruction as outlined in 29 CFR Part 1910.120, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

The goal is to improve participants' awareness of the hazards and safeguards associated with work at hazardous waste sites and EPA - RCRA Regulated Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities. Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the hazards associated with hazardous waste sites and TSD Facilities
  • Select and use the necessary personal protective equipment, including gloves, boots, chemical resistant suits and respiratory protection
  • Use portable gas testing equipment to detect the presence of flammable gases and vapors, oxygen deficient atmospheres and toxic substances
  • Review a site specific safety plan and incorporate its requirements into their daily work activities
  • Select and use portable fire extinguishers
  • Implement site emergency reporting and response procedures
